In the past, most if not all car hire companies would insist on a credit card in the name of the lead driver. This was used to cover any local excess amount or fuel deposit. The excess being the amount that you would be held liable for damage to the vehicle that was your fault. So if, like many, you refuse to use a credit card or do not qualify, you would find it difficult to book a rental car in Spain or elsewhere. Yes car hire for over 70’s is available with all the Lisbon car rental companies. Portugal like Itlay is easy going on upper age limits and many will still rent up to age 80 and some above 80! We advise bringing a recent medical record along if age 80 or above.

A security deposit is used to cover any damage that may occur due to neglect. For example, damage to the car’s interior, failing to return the car with the same amount of fuel, or speeding tickets that may arrive after you depart. The insurance policy offered by local providers always includes an excess amount. The excess is your liability, and the security deposit will also include this amount.
