The Language Trap at Italian Fuel Stations
Fuel names in Italy can be confusing, especially if you’re used to German or English terms. Below is a quick guide so you don’t put the wrong fuel in your rental car.
| Italian term | What it means | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Benzina | Gasoline / petrol (Super Unleaded, 95 octane) | Sometimes also shown as “Senza Piombo” (unleaded). |
| Gasolio | Diesel | Not “gas” or gasoline – this is diesel fuel. |
| GPL | Autogas (LPG) | Used only for vehicles specifically designed for LPG. |
| Metano | Natural gas (CNG) | Also for specially equipped vehicles; not for standard petrol or diesel cars. |
Tip: Your rental agreement usually states whether your car is Benzina (petrol) or Diesel / Gasolio. Take a photo of that section so you can quickly check it at the pump.

Driving a rental minivan in Italy tips and advice
Driving in Italy’s busy streets is nerve racking, that’s for sure. However, outside the city you’ll find very little difficulty. Italian drivers love to go fast, hence why for some it may seem daunting. Just go with the flow, and you’ll be fine. All roads have speed limits, even if they aren’t posted (which is common) so be aware that you can still be ticketed. Ignorance isn’t bliss in Italy.
ZTLs or Zona Traffico Limitato
Many Italian city centres restrict traffic with Zona Traffico Limitato areas. Cameras record every entry, so if you drive in without a permit, a fine is automatically sent to your rental company. These are no-drive zones unless you have a permit. They can be difficult to identify but most are indicated by a sign with a big red circle.
Toll fees in Italy are expensive
You may be in for a shock when it comes time to pay your first highway toll fee. If you do choose to use the main highways, keep a chunk of Euros within easy reach. As an example, the toll fee between Milan and Bolzano can set you back 30 Euros. If you think you can use your credit card, think again, as not all Italian tolls will accept credit cards.
Fuel types
Be sure to fill up with the right fuel as it is easy to get confused. Diesel is “Gasolio” in Italy. Petrol is “Benzina”. Putting the wrong fuel in a rental car is a costly mistake, as most suppliers will charge for tank draining plus loss of use while the car is off the road.
Parking signs
Don’t get hit with parking fines. Blue lines mark paid parking, white lines are free, and yellow lines are reserved (for residents, taxis, or deliveries). When in doubt, find a marked car park and pay the fee rather than risk a ticket.
Toll Roads (Autostrade)
These are everywhere in Italy. The rules are when you join the motorway, take a ticket at the entrance and pay when you leave. A few providers have a Telepass device pre-installed that will let you use the electronic lanes and skip queues. They will charge you at the rental end for usage.
Speed limits
The Autostrada (type A) has a speed limit of 110 km/h, while urban roads have a speed limit of around 50 km/h. Urban highways have a speed limit of 70 km/h. Speed cameras (Autovelox) are common and fines are sent to the rental company who pass them on.
Phone use while driving
Using a mobile phone without a hands-free system is illegal in Italy and fines start at around 165 Euros. Set up your navigation before you pull away. A second offence can result in licence suspension, so use a phone holder if you need to check directions.
What documents will I need to rent a car in Italy?
Please read the terms and conditions on the rental voucher and make sure you have all the documents required, otherwise the car rental company may refuse to release the rental car to you.
- Passport
- Credit Card for local security deposit, unless renting with DRIVUS who will currently accept VISA Debit Card.
- A driving licence. The driving licence should be in the English or Roman alphabet. If not, you will need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP).
- Print off a copy of your car rental voucher.
- For Non-EU residents, Italian law requires that you also have an International Driver’s Permit, although most rental companies will not ask for this.
How do I obtain an IDP?
If you need to apply for an IDP, use only official sites that are authorised by your government or state to provide. Please note, the Italian car rental company may not ask for it, but it is required by law.
Lots of people are saying that you do not need an IDP to rent a car in Italy, and it is true that most rental companies will not ask for one. But the fact is that it is the law for non-EU citizens.
